Poland risks getting old before getting rich

March 15 2017
The materials from the conference „Population ageing, labour market and public finance in Poland” (9th of March, Warsaw) are now available.

The current state of knowledge about the effects of rapid population ageing was presented during a conference organised by our Institute (IBS) and the European Commission Representation in Poland. “Population ageing is a challenge for the labour market, which Poland has to face” – said the president of IBS Piotr Lewandowski. A large number of conference participants – above 140 – have confirmed that a substantial discussion of this problem is needed in Poland.   The latest analyses were collected in the publication “Population ageing, labour market and public finance in Poland” created for the conference. The group of authors consists of experts from our Institute (IBS): Piotr Lewandowski, Iga Magda (PhD), Aneta Kiełczewska, and from the top academic institutions in Poland: professor Piotr Błędowski, Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak (PhD), Agnieszka Fihel (PhD), professor Irena E. Kotowska, Magda Malec, professor Marek Okólski and Joanna Tyrowicz (PhD). They discuss the challenges resulting from population ageing in Poland, such as:

  • decrease in the labour supply,
  • necessary changes in pension system,
  • changes in family policy,
  • immigration policy and
  • a long-term care system.

Selected results from the publication were presented by: Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak (Warsaw School of Economics – SGH), Piotr Lewandowski (Institute for Structural Research – IBS) and Joanna Tyrowicz (University of Warsaw – UW, National Bank of Poland – NBP). The context for the scientific analyses was provided by the “Country Report – Poland 2017”, the document of the European Commission, presented by Wallis Goelen (DG EMPL) and Wojciech Paczyński (DG ECFIN). During the panel discussions, almost 20 experts from the national and European public administration, science, employers’ associations and trade unions focused on the consequences of population ageing on the labour market and on public finances.   The summary of the conference is available on our website (link). If you consider the conference materials to be worthy of dissemination, we encourage you to forward them. We would also like to invite you to the next events organised by the European Commission Representation in Poland as well as our Institute.   Starzenie sie ludnosci_okladka_en
