The diverse conference programme in Columbus included presentations by individuals responsible for implementing just transition programs in the USA, scientific sessions dedicated to coal regions on various continents, and a field trip to post-mining areas of the Appalachians. The conference preceded a one-day workshop on project management and scientific publication work. The event was co-financed by a National Science Foundation grant led by Max Woodworth and Jeffrey Jacquet, as well as the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
During the conference, Jan Frankowski discussed the coal phase-out coal residential sector in Poland, with particular emphasis on residents’ and housing cooperatives’ experiences and their coping strategies in response to the crisis triggered by the embargo on Russian coal. The session also featured Elizabeth Bennett (UCLA), who presented research on the impact of the cryptocurrency industry on post-mining areas in Pennsylvania, and Fitsum Weldegeorgis (University of Queensland, Brisbane), who highlighted the preferences of various stakeholders in coal regions in the USA and Canada. Bishista Shree from OSU moderated the session.
In the poster session, Jan Frankowski presented a poster titled “Implications of the energy transition for the labour market in Europe’s largest hard coal region”, with the results from the TIPPING+ project completed last year. The poster addressed the exposure of jobs in Silesia’s mining and mining-related sectors to the decarbonisation process.
