About energy transition in housing during ENHR2023 Conference

July 12 2023
From June 28th to 30th, 2023, Jan Frankowski participated in the European Network of Housing Research (ENHR) conference. This is the largest scientific event focused on housing studies in Europe.

Throughout the three-day event, researchers from various European countries presented their latest work on social housing, housing cooperatives, other forms of co-housing, and energy efficiency and transition. Jan Frankowski participated in the “Energy Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability of Housing” session, where he presented a working paper addressing the challenges of transition from coal in residential buildings in Poland and the potential socio-spatial consequences of rising energy costs. The feedback received will help improve subsequent versions of the paper.

This year’s edition of the ENHR Conference took place in Poland for the first time. Among the keynote speakers at this year’s conference were Catalina Turku (LSE), Jesper Ole Jensen (University of Aalborg), Nessa Winston (University College Dublin), Ludek Sykora (Charles University in Prague), Aysegul Can (Istanbul Medeniyet University), and Paul Watt (University of London). Polish researchers also appeared at the plenary forum, including Magdalena Załęczna (University of Łódź), Marek Bryx (SGH), Zuzanna Rataj (UEk Poznań), who presented the housing challenges in Central and Eastern European countries, as well as Aleksandra Trzcińska (UM Łódź), Katarzyna Przybylska (Habitat for Humanity Poland), and Piotr and Władysław Grochowski from the Arche Group, representing the practitioners.

In addition to the academic part, an important element of the conference was the fun part, including a regular slide competition on housing issues in European cities, in which a British-Polish quartet with a representative from IBS won first place.

The next ENHR conference will take place in August 2024 at the Delft University of Technology.

The conference participation was financially supported by a grant from National Science Centre, Poland, under the OPUS call in the Weave programme (2021/43/I/HS4/03185).
