Gender Gaps Conference 2023

September 22 2023
The conference took place in Warsaw on 11-12 September 2023. Marta Palczyńska represented IBS.

The Gender Gaps event is organised annually by the GRAPE research centre. It gathers researchers working on gender inequality from economics, management, sociology, and social psychology.

Marta Palczyńska presented the results of the study “The employment effects of a wage subsidy for the young during an economic recovery”, co-authored by Astrid Kunze (NHH) and Iga Magda (IBS). The study assesses the employment effects of a large wage refund program for young unemployed people in Poland, which was introduced in 2016. We used an administrative data set on the population of people registered as unemployed. The new program was effective for low- and middle-skilled eligible young women but not for men.

The conference also included two keynote lectures. Libertad González (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) summarized her research on the effects of paternity leave on gender equality, fertility, and child development. Abi Adams-Prassl (University of Oxford) presented research on the economic consequences of gender-based violence. Women who start relationships with (eventually) physically abusive men suffer significant earnings, and employment drops immediately upon cohabiting with the abusive partner.
