Poster presentation at the ERSS Conference in Manchester

In the poster session, Jan presented the initial results of the National Science Centre project devoted to the heating transitions in the urban environment and their relations with energy poverty. Based on administrative data, he elaborated on the coal phase-out process in municipal buildings in Warsaw and proved that energy retrofits might reshape the socio-spatial structure of particular urban neighbourhoods to some extent.

Two research strands dominated the event: developing and applying the concept of energy justice as well as gender inequalities in energy policies. Thematically, many speeches also concerned electromobility, smart meters and fossil fuel phase-out, particularly important because of the Russian aggression on Ukraine. From the methodological point of view, many experiments and data science techniques using real-time or administrative data have been observed. The conference participants also pointed out areas requiring further attention such as energy practices and behaviours of more affluent people as well as a critical analysis of resource supply chains, taking into account social justice and working conditions in the Global South countries.

The International Conference on Energy Research and Social Science (#ERSS2022) is the premier global forum for exploring the nexus of energy and society. This year, the conference took place between 20th and 23rd June at the University of Manchester with almost 400 people participating from all over the world.
