Task content of occupations in countries at various development levels

realization time: 07.2019 - 03.2020

In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in how the future of work will be shaped by new technologies. Economists have found analysis of changes in job tasks to be a fruitful way to understand how labour market outcomes are influenced by the changing nature of work. In this project, we develop a methodology of predicting worker tasks in countries at various development levels. We utilize the results of earlier work by Piotr Lewandowski, Albert Park, Wojciech Hardy and Yang Du to create new econometric models to predict task content of occupations in a large number of countries.
The project will result in a research paper, as well as data inputs which will be used by the UNU WIDER researchers in the forthcoming volume on inequality and structural change in low- and middle-income countries.
In this project, we cooperate with Albert Park (IEMS HKUST) and Simone Schotte (UNU WIDER). Piotr Lewandowski also joins the WIDER research network as a Non-Resident Senior Research Fellow.

We establish new stylised facts about the global evolution and distribution of routine and non-routine work, relaxing the common assumption that occupations are identical globally. We combine survey data and regression models to predict the country-specific routine-task intensity of occupations in 87 countries employing over 2.5 billion workers, equivalent ...
